This workshop will bring together anthropologists and historians to discuss their respective approaches to the Yunnan and Guizhou provinces—a highland area often eclipsed by the broader term “southwestern China,” despite its distinct history from that of Sichuan (see Yang Bin and John E. Herman). This region, shaped by the existence of influential multi-ethnic kingdoms until the 13th century, will serve as the starting point for our collaborative reflection. Our goal is to highlight the narratives and practices of local populations, designated as “minority nationalities,” who inhabit this geographical space.
We will focus on how these communities themselves articulate their local histories, as expressed through diverse sources and mediums, including ritual and textual materials. Concurrently, we will examine these narratives with their representation in official Chinese historiography, which employs a distinct form of historical narrative.
