Oxford one-year position in premodern China

The Faculty of Oriental Studies at Oxford are advertising a one-year post in premodern China to start in October 2018.

Departmental Lecturer in Chinese

We are seeking an enthusiastic and suitably qualified academic lecturer to cover teaching in pre-modern Chinese studies, while we recruitment to a senior permanent position. These teaching responsibilities will require approximately 10 hours per week contact time with students during term.

The lecturer will prepare and deliver lectures and teaching in classes and small groups for undergraduates and graduate students. This will include classes in Classical Chinese texts, and in Chinese history and civilization. He/she will set and mark examinations and projects, supervise dissertations, and assist with admissions at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The lecturer will co-operate with colleagues over administrative arrangements, and be prepared to support students as required. She/he will also conduct advanced independent scholarly research and otherwise contribute to current research, including by publication and presentation, and by participation in the activities of the Chinese Subject Group and the China Centre.

With a doctorate, by the time the post commences, in an aspect of Chinese studies, you will be able to show both aptitude for and experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate level. You will demonstrate a solid knowledge of the Chinese language, with the ability to teach Classical Chinese; in addition you will be able to teach aspects of the history and civilization of China, and supervise graduate students on topics in this area. You will show a commitment to communicating and publishing research in this field of research. Your excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills will be coupled with a willingness to take on appropriate administrative tasks.

This is a full time post for a fixed period of one year.
