From Empire to 20th-Century State: A view from multi-level water governance in China
R. Bin Wong (Professor, UCLA), professeur invité à l’EHESS, présentera une unique conférence : « From Empire to 20th-Century State: A view from multi-level water governance in China ».
Studies of water control have figured prominently in scholarship on Chinese history—from Wittfogel’s ‘oriental despotism’ to Japanese ideas about Chinese ‘community.’ This presentation argues that while most all of the available scholarship captures some features of earlier practices of water control, little effort has been made to synthesize across these observations and assemble them into a framework that can also prepars us to consider how water control changed in 20th-century China. Reconstructing features of that transformation presents one perspective on how China’s modern state making experiences share some features with state making in other world regions as China’s modern state also emerges out of changes along a particular path of development.
