Appel à participation : Dams and Water Reservoirs induced migration
Katiana Le Mentec (CCJ, CNRS) et Marcia Grisotti (Federal University of Santa Catarina, Bresil) vous invitent à candidater au panel « Dams and Water Reservoirs induced migration : Encounters of relocation’s imaginaries and resistances » qui aura lieu lors du 18ème congrès de l’International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) à la Federal University of Santa Catarina (Florianópolis, Brésil).
Thème du panel
This panel investigates relocation plans induced by dams and water reservoirs such as the Bello Monte Dam (Brazil), the Three Gorges Dam (China) and other middle or small size water reservoir forced migrations. These relocation projects are elaborated by governments, collaborating sometimes with development organisations and construction companies, promoting a certain interpretation – usually positive – of the process. They may rely on scientific, historical and mythical arguments, spread by way of TV, multimedia, festivals, exhibitions and so on to facilitate the acceptation of the relocation by the affected communities and garner the support of the population. While relocated people are promised a bright future, they may also seize tools to shape and express their views on a relocation process separating them from their ancestral home and environment. Rituals, deity’s miracles and signs, legends, local arts especially, conveying powerful and shared meaning among them, can constitute springboards allowing affected communities not only to rectify the official master interpretation but also to mobilise, to critic and condemn aspects of relocation plans.
We invite papers (in english) that explore encounters of imaginaries built on discourses related to such planned relocation: the tools and platforms used by actors involved as well as the level of interactions and confrontation of views. We particularly encourage submissions of cases based on ethnographic fieldwork. Papers may discuss current relocation projects or achieved ones, and in this case may consider their memory and legacies.
The comparative framework of the panel invite to explore two theoretical questions:
1 – What can we learn about ways through which social actors elaborate imaginaries and interpretation on forced migration?
2 – How do relocation projects allow us to rethink encounters of imaginaries and interpretation between entities such as the State, local communities, local civil servants, businesses and development organisation ?
