Professor of Chinese History at Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities . This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum – Faculty of East Asian Studies invites applications for the position of a Professor of Chinese History (W3 salary bracket; previous chair: Heiner Roetz) to start as soon as possible.

The future holder of the post will be able to conduct teaching and research covering the complete subject area of Chinese History. The applicant should further have a proven record of academic excellence in his or her area of specialization. His or her area of specialization will enable the successful candidate to link with colleagues working on modern or pre-modern topics. The future chair professor is expected to have excellent written and oral Chinese language skills including the ability to work with pre-modern texts in Literary Chinese.

Positive evaluation as a junior professor or equivalent academic achievement (e.g. habilitation, current position as an associate professor, reader or similar) is required for the advertised post. The candidate should have a proven track record in teaching. Furthermore, he or she should be willing to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB and in university processes according to RUB’s mission statement. A willingness to master German as a language of instruction is expected.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • high commitment in teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
  • readiness to participate in interdisciplinary academic work
  • a proven record of willingness and ability to attract external research funding
  • willingness and ability to contribute to cooperative research and teaching projects including cooperation within the Alliance for Research on East Asia Ruhr (AREA Ruhr) and similar research consortia

It is desirable that the applicant can integrate his or her expertise into joint research applications including joint applications within the Center for Religious Studies (Centrum für Religionswissenschaftliche Studien, CERES), a long-standing cooperation partner of the Faculty of East Asian Studies.
