Urbanisation in China
Panel Discussion and Book Launch
Speakers: Miguel Elosua, Stephan Feuchtwang, François Gipouloux and Sébastien Goulard
Chair: Athar Hussain
Urbanisation in China has been rapid, vast in scale and is taking place under tight environmental constraints. China’s urban population grew by 451 million between 1982 and 2010 implying a growth rate of 16 million persons – or a city the size of Shanghai – each year. The urbanisation rate at the end of 2014 was around 55% and is expected to reach 60% by the end of 2018. China’s urbanisation shares some features with urbanisation in other countries, but it also exhibits distinctive features because of two particular institutions: the household registration system and the division of public ownership of land into state and collective ownership.
The panel discussion aims to present a selection of results and to launch a book, China’s Urban Century, arising from the research project Sustainable Urbanisation in China (UrbaChina), which was funded by the European Union under its Framework 7 Programme. The project was a collaborative venture and involved both European and Chinese researchers and institutions, including the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHSS) in Paris, Institute of Geography at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Renmin University and LSE.
